PIECES HEIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM: Automatic concrete block height measurement with laser precision

In concrete block production, dimensional accuracy is essential to guarantee product quality, reduce waste, and maintain consistency throughout the manufacturing process. Even small height deviations can affect stacking, curing, transport, and final installation.

The Rometa pieces height control system is designed to provide real-time, automatic height measurement of concrete blocks directly in the production line, without interrupting tray movement or reducing productivity.

Using high-precision laser sensors, the system continuously validates block dimensions and helps manufacturers maintain strict tolerances with maximum efficiency.

What is a concrete block height control system?

A height control system is an automated quality inspection solution integrated into the block machine exit line to verify whether produced concrete elements meet predefined dimensional tolerances.

The Rometa system measures the actual height of concrete products immediately after production, ensuring that every piece complies with required specifications.

Unlike manual inspections or random sampling, this technology performs continuous, real-time measurements during production, allowing immediate detection of deviations.

How the Rometa height control system works

As trays loaded with freshly produced concrete blocks leave the block machine, they pass through a measurement arch equipped with three laser sensors positioned strategically:

  • Left side
  • Center
  • Right side

Each laser sensor performs a double reading process:

  1. The distance to the empty tray surface.
  2. The distance to the top surface of the concrete block.

By comparing these two measurements, the system calculates the actual block height with an accuracy of ±0.1 mm.

This level of precision enables manufacturers to maintain highly consistent dimensions across production batches and minimize quality issues before curing or palletizing.

Six measurement points for maximum accuracy

To ensure reliable dimensional control, each laser measures both the front and rear section of the block.

This generates a total of six measurement points per production cycle, allowing the system not only to validate overall height but also detect:

  • Height deviations outside tolerance
  • Uneven compaction
  • Product tilting
  • Surface inconsistencies between front and rear sections

This advanced inspection capability helps manufacturers identify production irregularities at an early stage and maintain stable product quality.

Real-Time quality control through an intuitive interface

The system includes a touchscreen control interface that gives operators complete visibility of production quality in real time.

Operators can:

  • Set a customized tolerance threshold (for example, ±1 mm)
  • Monitor block measurements live
  • Compare current and previous production cycles
  • Detect dimensional trends and recurring deviations

Each measured piece is automatically classified:

OK → within the acceptable tolerance range
KO → outside tolerance, either too high or too low

This instant feedback enables faster decision-making and prevents production inconsistencies from continuing unnoticed.

Automatic or manual machine adjustment

The Rometa Pieces Height Control System can operate in two different modes depending on the factory’s automation level.

Automatic mode

In automatic operation, the system communicates directly with the block machine and sends correction signals based on measured deviations.

Machine parameters can be adjusted automatically, including:

  • Filling volume
  • Vibration settings

This closed-loop control helps maintain consistent product dimensions without operator intervention.

Manual mode

For plants that prefer operator supervision, the system can also work in manual mode.

The operator receives real-time measurement data on screen and can manually adjust machine parameters according to production requirements.

Benefits of automatic height control in concrete block production

Implementing a laser-based height measurement system offers several operational advantages:

Improved product quality
Consistent dimensions ensure better product reliability and compliance with project requirements.

Reduced waste and rejections
Early detection of dimensional deviations prevents defective production from continuing.

Increased process stability
Continuous monitoring helps maintain stable machine performance throughout production.

Higher automation levels
Automatic machine corrections reduce manual intervention and improve operational efficiency.

Better production traceability
Historical cycle comparison allows operators to detect trends and optimize settings over time.

Why precision matters in concrete block manufacturing?

In modern concrete production, quality control can no longer depend solely on manual inspections.

Real-time dimensional monitoring allows manufacturers to maintain tighter tolerances, improve efficiency, and reduce production variability.

The Rometa pieces height control system transforms block height verification into a fully integrated, automated process that supports higher product consistency and smarter factory operation.
